Atlanta, Georgia (September 1, 2023) –  Adair Park Today, Inc. (APT) is hosting a Grand Opening Ceremony for Muscogee Park at Brookline Triangle on Friday, September 8, 10AM – 12PM. This marks the completion of Phase I for the project, which included a complete renovation of the pocket park in this historic neighborhood. All are invited to participate as leaders from the Muscogee Nation and the City of Atlanta celebrate this important milestone.

The transformation centers the Muscogee Nation as the original stewards of the land that is now the City of Atlanta. The park serves as an important marker for Atlanta residents and visitors to learn about the history of Muscogee removal and about the vibrant cultural traditions of the Muscogee Nation as they exist today.

“It’s such a thrill for the Muscogee Nation to join together with our partners in this project, to see Muscogee Park unveiled in the City of Atlanta,” Principal Chief David Hill said. “Piece-by-piece we are reclaiming our story in the Southeast. The people we are working with realizing the importance of that story being told correctly is what makes special occasions like this possible.”

“We invite anyone living, working or visiting Atlanta to come to Adair Park and experience this space for themselves,” says Adair Park President, Michelle Marcus. “We hope this project will serve as a blueprint for how other Georgia communities might partner with tribal nations with homelands in the state.”

“We celebrate the preservation and representation of the Muscogee Nation’s historical contributions and resilience,” shares City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Justin Cutler. “We are proud to partner with Adair Park Today in this remarkable milestone of opening the first park of its kind in the City of Atlanta.”

Throughout Phase I, Adair Park Today worked with Park Pride and Hands on Atlanta to host over 150 volunteers in the park. This included educating community members about the history of the Muscogee Nation.

Adair Park Today, Inc. thanks the Transformation Alliance, Park Pride, Cherokee Garden Club, Hands on Atlanta, Trees Atlanta, CreateATL, Councilmember Lewis (D-12) and the City of Atlanta Parks & Recreation Department for supporting this project.

About the Muscogee Nation

The Muscogee Nation is a self-governed Native American tribe located in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. The Muscogee Nation is one of the Five Civilized Tribes and is the fourth largest tribe in the U.S. with 86,100 citizens. During the early 19th century, the United States Indian policy focused on the removal of the Muscogee and the other Southeastern tribes toareas beyond the Mississippi River. In the removal treaty of 1832, Muscogee leadership exchanged the last of the cherished Muscogee ancestral homelands, including parts of Georgia, for new lands in Indian Territory (Oklahoma).
