5 Home Insulation Tips That Can Save You Lots of Money

As the cold snap hits Atlanta square in the face, here are some energy and money saving home insulation tips that might help you stay warmer this winter while saving some cash!

House insulation

Increase Attic Insulation – Your attic is a big source of home heat loss and is one of the easiest places to get in to. If your attic does not have at least 12 inches of insulation you can lay paperless rolls of insulation on top of existing insulation, including cellulose or vermiculate. These types of insulation tend to “compact” over time, reducing their effectiveness.

Use weatherstripping around windows and doors – Lots of heat is lost through the spaces around windows and doors. Modern weatherstripping materials are inexpensive and very effective at minimizing the loss of warm air (and money). Most do-it-yourselfers can install weatherstripping pretty easily. Just make sure to do it in temperatures above 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, always apply weatherstripping to clean, dry surfaces to maximize effectiveness and ensure that it lasts for a long time.

Use expansion foam for small spaces – Expansion foam insulation works great for filling small openings that allow heat to escape. Some examples include the spaces behind electric switch plates on exterior walls, openings where plumbing pipes enter the house, and the small openings that are used to run electricity, cable, and internet lines into your home. All together these little spaces add up to a lot of heat loss and a little bit of inexpensive expansion foam can save you a lot of money on your heating bill.

Don’t forget the crawlspace – Home basements and crawlspaces often have many little openings that let heat escape. This is especially true if they are unfinished. Use paper-faced insulation on exposed ceiling joists and stuff small pieces of insulation into open crevices at the juncture of basement walls and the ceiling. Also, you might want to pump some expansion foam insulation into any small openings around the foundation, which are usually no more than an inch or two wide.

Use window curtains and blinds – One of the simplest ways to reduce heat loss through windows is to use curtains and blinds. They can be closed at night to trap cold air and opened during the day to allow sunlight to naturally warm the house. Remember that the thicker the curtain, the more effective it will be at insulating your house.

As you can see, none of the home insulation steps above are too difficult or too expensive to accomplish. But they will save you a ton of money over the years. Take advantage of them and you just might find this year’s heating bills to be lower than expected!

Help Keep Atlanta Clean – Recycle!

Do your part to help the environment and keep recyclable items out of our landfills by splitting your recycling out from your trash. Everyone should have a small black recycling bin, but there are alternatives. You can get stickers from the city to put on your own bins, or better yet, now you can even request a large rolling blue recycle bin from the city!

Call 404-330-6333 or send an email to publicworks@atlantaga.gov to request your large bin. Items eligible for curbside recycling collection include: newspapers, aluminum cans, glass bottles and jars (remove the lids), steel (tin) cans, plastic food containers and bottles (please rinse out), mixed paper, office paper, junk mail, telephone books, boxboard (cereal, tissue boxes), shredded paper tied in a clear plastic bag, magazines, catalogues, cardboard (broken down or cut to fit the bin). Please DO NOT put plastic bags, hoses, pipes or furniture in the bins. Most grocery stores have recycling bins for your plastic bags.

Here are some other great recycling resources. Help keep Atlanta clean! http://www.earth911.com, http://www.keepatlantabeautiful.com, http://www.dca.state.ga.us

Atlanta recognized as one of the least segregated cities in the US

In a recent article posted in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Census Bureau released results showing that black segregation in the US drops to the lowest in the century. Atlanta was recognized as one of the cities with the least segregated neighborhoods. The findings on segregation are partly based on a demographic index that tracks the degree to which racial groups are evenly spread between city and suburb.

Adair Park is a great example of diversity in Atlanta. Our small neighborhood is a melting pot with a variety in ethnicity, age, sexual preference, religious beliefs, political stances and other cultural differences. We even have a wide range of types of dogs and cats! This one of many reasons our residents love Adair Park and their neighbors. You can walk down any street in Adair Park, stop and talk to a neighbor you pass and get a different perspective on views you may have based on their background. Our desires to improve our homes, our neighborhood and our lives also bring our neighborhood closer together. Stop by an Adair Park meeting and see a microcosm of the city of Atlanta and the direction we are moving.

Brrrrrrr! Sure is cold outside!

Winter is definitely in FULL swing. As I stood in the street, bundled up with gloves and a scarf and scraped off my windshield to head to work this morning, I was thinking about all the ways Adair Park neighbors are also trying to stay warm. Fulton County Fire officials offer these cold weather safety tips. Stay inside and stay warm!

Outdoor Thermometer

The Fulton County Fire and Rescue Department is urging residents to take safety precautions when heating their home this fall and winter. There are important factors to consider whether you are heating your home with a fireplace, space heater or a wood stove.

Fireplaces
– Have your chimney or wood stove inspected and cleaned regularly.
– Keep the area around the hearth clear of debris, decorations and flammable materials.
– Leave the glass fireplace doors open while you are burning a fire. Close the doors only when the fire is out.
– Always use a mesh screen with fireplaces that do not have glass doors.
– Do not use excessive amounts of paper when lighting, and do not use liquid fire starter.
– Keep firewood at least 30 feet from your home.
– Keep the roof clear of levaes, and remove branches hanging above the chimney.

Space Heaters
– Only use space heaters that will turn off automatically if they fall over.
– Avoid storing objects on top of space heaters.
– Keep combustible materials at least three feet away from space heaters.
– Always unplug space heaters when not in use.

Wood Stoves
– Install stovepipe thermometers to help monitor flue temperatures.
– Keep air inlets on wood stoves open.
– Use fire resistant materials around wood stoves.

One of the best ways to protect your home from fire is to install a smoke detector on each level of your home and outside sleeping areas. Residents are encouraged to test their smoke detectors monthly and change the batteries every six months.
